Hearing International (HI), www.med.teikyo-u.ac.jp/~hi-japan/HomePage.html. A non-governmental organization (NGO) established in October 1992. Works with World Health Organization (WHO) and others to address causes of hearing loss, such as otitis media, congenital and hereditary deafness, noise-induced hearing loss, ototoxic deafness and inner ear infections. Publications: quarterly newsletter.

International Federation of Hard of Hearing People (IFHOHP), www.ifhoh.org. Registered charity and NGO with 45 general and associate members in 29 countries. Joins with International Federation for Hard of Hearing Young People to: provide a platform for cooperation and exchange of information between organizations for hard of hearing (HOH) people; support and take part in investigation and research of hearing disorders; and stimulate search for solutions to communication, education, employment and other problems facing HOH people in daily life. Publications: newsletter and biannual magazine.

International Federation of Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Societies (IFOS), www.ifosworld.org. An NGO in official relationship with WHO. Mission: to identify global oto-rhino-laryngological needs and propose ways to prevent and treat them, prioritizing according to impact on society. Publications: newsletter.

International Society of Audiology (ISA), www.isa-audiology.org. Seeking charitable organization status, ISA membership is open to all people working in audiology (healthcare or research) and to all organizations working in the field. Organizes workshops and seminars, distributes HI’s newsletter, advances interests of audiology and related fields and hearing-impaired people. Humanitarian Audiology committee coordinates philanthropic projects globally. Publications: International Journal of Audiology. Events: Biannual Congress of Audiology.

World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), www.wfdeaf.org, email to GeneralSecretary@wfdeaf.org. Established in 1951, central organization of national associations of Deaf people. Members in 123 countries and represents approximately 70 million Deaf people. Works to improve status of national sign languages, education for Deaf people, access to information, services and human rights for Deaf people in developing countries. Publications: “WFD News.” Events: World Congress every four years, next in July, 2007, in Madrid.

World Health Organization Prevention of Deafness and Hearing Impairment, www.who.int/noncommunicable_diseases/about/pbd/en. United Nations agency assists member states to reduce and eventually eliminate avoidable hearing impairment and disability through appropriate preventive measures. New WHO website with comprehensive information launches soon.
